Artist's Statement

Julia Kelland creates striking and vibrant works of art. A unique dialogue is built upon the paper as she transforms ‘accidentals’ and realistic representations of wildlife into colourful images. This process lends each piece a life of its own. Inspired by regular courses at West Dean College under Margaret Merritt with many works derived from tapestries seen there, Julia's art grows from strength to strength as she has at last returned to her ‘beloved’ Devon.

About Julia

West DeanI have been attending art courses regularly since the mid 1980's and originally painted exclusively in oils. I met Margaret Merritt in 1998 and joined her courses first at Tongham in Surrey and then once a year at West Dean College in Sussex. She introduced me to mixed media painting and many wonderful new techniques, inspiring me to paint ‘big’ and look at art in a totally different way.

I moved back to Devon in 2000 and have continued to attend Workshops regularly with Margaret.  I paint regularly in my studio and with a group of exciting artists near London.

Since returning to Devon I have had two successful solo exhibitions in Totnes and at my home during Devon Open Studios in September 2009. I will be participating again in September 2010 as part of Devon Open Studios when I look forward to meeting the visitors and discussing my work - see Exhibitions page.
